Serial numbers beginning with an S were produced from 1945 until 1948. In 1945 they started with S811338 and went to 999999 in 1948. Based on your serial number yours was probably late 1947 to early 1948. In 1957 the 38 M&P became the model 10. There definitely should be a serial number on the butt.. Beyond reasonable doubt
