Mar 1, 2018 · If you are making an I-40 road trip out of it, consider detouring north into Santa Fe, check out the mountain stream fishing, then up to the San Juan River, one of the most prolific tailwaters around. Then go southwest (the 64 and 160) through the picturesque Monument Valley area to get to the Grand Canyon. Waters get low and/or too warm to fish in some rivers (e.g. St. Joe) by early August. Best times in northern Idaho are either mid or late July, or September into first week or two of October. The September-October season is my favorite, especially on the larger streams. During the earlier period (July) my favorites are the small tributaries.Planned trips (lodging secured) are: early May with the wife on the Missouri, after two days she flies home and my buddy flies in for a few days. Mid August fishing on the Madison with my teenage daughter, which will mostly include playing a round of golf on the drive up. Late August fishing on the Madison and Yellowstone with the wife.Whenever I can’t entice fish to rise for dries, or I can’t see fish rise I pack my dry rod, and use euronymphing or streamer setup. My 'gill set up is the same as my high mountain Sierras set up. Custom 7'6" 1wt full flex rod with Orvis Battenkill BBS reel with the RIO Trout LT DT line. Bluegills have small mouths and respond killer to small unweighted nymphs as well as small dries. On the one hand, the Payload was introduced after the Bass II was discontinued and both were designed for throwing big flies with compact head/overweighted lines. I'm a big 6wt fan and have a slow action 7'6" 6wt Cabela's CGR glass rod for my small water fishing, a 6wt TFO Axiom II-X for my heavier streamer/bass/carp fishing, and the 6wt Pro II was there as my medium-fast all-around trout rod that also doubled as a great rod for short to medium distance bass fishing when the Axiom II-X felt like overkill.
